Why We Do It

For many coastal communities in British Columbia, the ocean has been a sacred part of cultural identity, history, and ongoing relationships with the land and water since time immemorial. Furthermore, the waters are valued as a source of wisdom, healing and spiritual connection. Caring for the waters, therefore, means caring for ourselves.

However, within Indigenous as well as other marginalized communities, cultural, geographic, and socioeconomic obstacles often limit meaningful interactions with marine environments. In contrast, affluent groups with greater access to boats, specialized training/education, and costly equipment tend to benefit more fully from coastal regions - including the recreational, economic and governance opportunities. This imbalance contributes to the underrepresentation of marginalized communities in coastal decision-making processes, resulting in policies that frequently overlook their unique knowledge, needs or concerns.

We Are Water provides immersive learning opportunities for those in underrepresented communities to foster relationships with the ocean, community, and self.
